TAMASHII began as an obsession for Mark LaFleur at Old Fast Glass. Five years ago he set out to create a no compromises set of vintage full frame primes that did exactly what he loved, and nothing he didn’t. He worked alone for years, buried in a mountain of glass and terabytes of tests, relentlessly pitting lenses against each other until a “winner” emerged for every focal length.
Mark’s goal was simple and impossibly demanding. A unified set from roughly 20mm to 100mm. Sharp wide open yet flattering. Flares that felt expressive and cinematic without ever tipping into modern slickness. Bokeh that was textured and impressionistic, never messy. Fast lenses, centered around f2, with little to no chromatic aberration, designed to live wide open.
Once he had his dream set, Mark did something different. Instead of walking in with a spec sheet, he brought Zero Optik and Ancient Optics blind lens tests and they together worked on the rehousing based on performance and character, lenses that they could feel the TAMASHII, the soul. From there, Zero Optik pushed the design to its limit and Ancient Optics backed the vision, turning Mark’s solitary hunt into a full blooded lens line with no "fillers," every focal length in TAMASHII is a standout, meeting high standards for character and performance.
The set was designed to combine the unique bokeh of LOMO Super Speeds, the lens flares of Canon K-35s, and the sharpness of Zeiss Super Speeds, all without chromatic aberration-even when used wide open. Consistency across all focal lengths is essential, and acheived.
The result is housings that are both attractive and functional, lenses that are incredibly compact, lightweight, and capable of focusing very closely. The resulting images are exceptionally beautiful, making these lenses enjoyable and effortless to use, consistently delivering special results.
